Do your kids like hunting for treasure? Paige and I had a girls day out to the V&A Waterfront and Scratch Patch, to hunt for precious gemstones. Our good friend Margaret joined us and since she knows her stuff when it comes to gemstones, educated us in the different sorts and what to look for.

Paige happily scratched around and filled her bag, then tipped it all out, and refilled a couple of more times after that. Packets come in different sizes and for all budgets: small for R17, medium for R30 and large for R99*.

The shop has some beautiful jewellery and ornaments which may interest mom more, and their birth stone items make a lovely keepsake for children. The Waterfront outlet is very popular and if you are visiting Simon’s Town, they also have an outlet there too.

The shop assistant shared some good ideas for what to do with the gemstones once you get home, including making faces; gluing a magnet on the back to keep on the fridge; and, also doing colour sorting and counting the stones.

We used oogly eyes, pom poms, feathers and pipe cleaners to decorate our little stone people and you can use whatever craft supplies you have available.
