Elf for Christmas

Elf for Christmas This year, Christmas is going to be so exciting for our family. Not only will it be our first Christmas in our new home, we have an elf friend joining us this year, thanks to an Elf for Christmas. The kids are at an age now where they can appreciate all the celebrations and traditions around this time of year. Ethan will have just turned 4 and Paige will be 5 years. They are already practicing for their Christmas concert at school and can feel the excitement in anticipation of Santa Claus’ arrival. If you are looking to start new traditions and make Christmas even more magical, then keep reading. I also have a 10% discount code on offer!

Elf for Christmas

A modern family tradition, Elf for Christmas is a magical toy and reward kit perfect for girls and boys aged 2 and over. Available as a girl or boy Elf, this engaging toy brings fun and magic to your home throughout December – while promoting good behaviour and family interaction. Elf for Christmas was born in the UK in 2015,and this year Santa is sending his little helpers further afield into sunny South Africa. The magical concept/story behind this UK award winning toy “Elf For Christmas” is that the loveable little elf is sent to a home all the way from the North Pole by Santa himself – with a main purpose of watching over the children and reporting back on good or bad behaviour. He/she also serves as a direct communication link to The North Pole for kids to send their letters to Santa.

Now, as is customary with Christmas – all the magic comes to life while all the children are sleeping – so after the lights have gone out and all is quiet, the little elf “comes alive” and gets up to all kinds of mischief (with a little help from Mum or Dad, of course) – doing a variety of quirky things around the home … from fun and naughty things like eating cookies from Mommy’s cookie jar and leaving crumbs on the counter … to kind and helpful chores like tidying away toys that the kids may have left out (but beware – he/she may report back a messy room to Santa!).

Elf for Christmas

Where the magic really lies is in the Christmas Reward Kit – a unique package to help you bring the excitement of the Elf to life. The kit includes an arrival letter from Santa, explaining Elf’s role in your home, a reward chart and stickers, Mini Report Cards and Certificates that can be used to promote kindness and good behaviour. Will you be on the Naughty or Nice List?

Keep the festive spirit alive with Beware of the Elf signs for your door and a Thank You postcard to round off the magic in January. There is also a Letter to Santa Claus template, ready to post your letters off to the big man himself, and a Goodbye letter for when it’s time for Elf to go back to the North Pole. Throughout December, you will receive unique personalised emails from Santa Claus, directly to your children or class, with information that your Elf has learnt about you. It really is magic. All you need to do is believe it!

No-fuss flossing for kids

No-fuss flossing for kids #flosslikeabossDid you know that you should be flossing your children’s teeth on a daily basis, even from the age of two years? According to dental professionals, you should start cleaning in-between as soon as the teeth touch one another, usually between two and six years of age.

Importance of cleaning in-between

The follow tips may help your child understand the importance of cleaning in-between:

  • Explain that brushing can only clean the front, back and top of the tooth. Flossing is to clean the sides.
  • Floss your own teeth regularly – children tend to copy what you do more than what you say.
  • Floss for them. Until your children are able to floss effectively on their own, usually around 12 years old, give them a hand to help keep their mouth in tip top condition.

Says Stella Lamprecht, President of the Oral Hygienists’ Association of South Africa, “We can honestly say you only have to floss those teeth that you would like to keep. There are a lot of conflicting messages out there, but as oral hygienists we recommend that you clean between the teeth or floss every day. If you don’t, it’s like letting your child walk barefoot in the mud and not cleaning between the toes afterwards. The mud will stick.”

How to floss your child’s teeth

The technique to floss your child’s teeth is very similar to flossing your own:

  1. Take about 30cm of floss
  2. Wind the floss around your middle fingers
  3. Hold it floss between thumbs and index fingers
  4. Slide the floss in-between your child’s teeth using a gentle back-and-forth sawing action
  5. Fold floss around the side of the tooth in a C-shape and slide it floss up and down, against tooth and just under the gum line. Repeat on the neighbouring tooth.
  6. Pull out and repeat in-between the next teeth.

Learn how to floss correctly in less than a minute with short, simple videos on www.ivohealth.co.za/FlossLikeABoss. You’ll also find a video on flossing orthodontic braces, just one of the many challenges you may face as a parent of a tween or teenager!

I find it easiest to floss my children’s teeth if I ask the children to lie down on the bed, with their head on the pillow. They find it easier to open their mouths wider, and they tend to move around less.

Flossing tools to suit your child

Oral hygienist Dirna Grobbelaar, Ivohealth’s oral hygiene advisor, suggests making cleaning in-between an everyday habit, using traditional floss once a child is old enough, or a special flossing tool. “Sunstar GUM Soft-Picks are modern tooth-picks with tiny rubber bristles that are easy to use and gentle on the gums; my toddlers prefer them to floss. Floss on a handle, like disposable GUM Easy Flossers or a GUM Automatic Flosbrush are also great, particularly when you are still cleaning your child’s teeth for them. Or try a power option, such as the Panasonic Oral Irrigator or Sonicare AirFloss which jets a microburst of air and water between the teeth, cleaning the entire mouth in just 30 seconds. The main thing is to find a tool that suits you and your child.”

Play-Doh Kitchen Creations fun

Play-Doh Burger Barbeque Kitchen Creations review by The Mommy City

Oh boy, the excitement when the Play-Doh Kitchens Creations Burger set arrived for Paige and Ethan. They have played with it for hours, and haven’t even mixed up the Play-Doh colours that much (that’s saying something)! What is nice about these sets, is it gives the kids a starting point for their creative play. If I just hand over the Play-Doh, they don’t always know what to make, or just make the same things over again. This has sparked some more creativity in their play, and is a nice addition to our Play-Doh collection. Their range of products is wide, and I’ve included links to other mommy blogger reviews below, so you can see more of the range in play.

The Play-Doh Kitchen Creations range includes a variety of playsets and tools to inspire storytelling, imaginative thinking, creative play, and fun for wannabe cooks without the dirty dishes piling up.

Have fun with the Play-Doh Sizzlin’ Stovetop that makes real sizzling sounds as soon as the skillet or saucepan are placed on the burners. Listen to how the sizzle gets louder when a Play-Doh creation is placed in one of the pans, almost like a real stove. Want to know what’s on the menu? Use the Play-Doh stamps to create pretend steak and eggs, crazy burgers and even fish.  Add some Play-Doh veggies with the half mould and use your tongs and spatula to flip and grab your creations before displaying them on the plates provided.

Aspiring chefs can experience the fun of baking without the fuss with the Play-Doh Magical Oven that features real lights and sounds. Simply put some Play-Doh compound in a pretend food attachment and place it in the oven, press the lever and see the Play-Doh food ‘bake’ almost like magic. The lights change from white to red as the pretend food finishes ‘cooking’, and the oven makes a ‘ding’ sound when it’s done. The five pretend food attachments include favorites like make-believe muffins, crazy cake, pretend pie, and more. Add fun side dishes with the moulds to customise the creations.

Start the day with Play-Doh Breakfast Bakery. Create a delightful breakfast menu with the waffle maker, which shapes both square and round Play-Doh waffles, it also creates imaginary toast, pretend pancakes, lots of make-believe toppings, and more. Use the syrup bottle to squeeze pretend syrup or fluffy Play-Doh Plus whipped cream on top to complete the creations. There are also three creation cards to inspire creativity. With so many fun things to make Play-Doh breakfast time might even take up the whole day.

Slice and chop some Play-Doh culinary creativity with Play-Doh Shape ‘N Slice. This fun set of kitchen-themed tools lets budding chefs create and cut colourful Play-Doh snacks and meals. The cutting boards feature lots of half-moulds to shape a variety of silly fruits, veggies, pretend meats, and more. Slice the imaginary ingredients on the cutting board with the cleaver, knives, and shears. Squeeze out a variety of shapes with the presser tool including pretend celery, garlic and more. Toss it all together in the bowl and share it with the plates and spoon.

‘Fire up’ the make-believe grill with the Play-Doh Burger Barbeque Choose from five Play-Doh compound colours and creative tools to roll, cut, squeeze, shape and mould fun Play-Doh hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and toppings. Create outrageous onion rings and an assortment of Play-Doh toppings on the lid of the grill. Use the decorator tool to create fantasy fries and pretend condiments using the different shapes on the rail attachment.

From pretend pasta to imaginary ramen bowls, the Play-Doh Noodle Makin’ Mania set offers creative cooks the opportunity to dish up all kinds of delightful Play-Doh noodle dishes. Simply choose a disc to change the shape, load some Play-Doh compound into the noodle maker and press the handle to squeeze oodles of noodles. Add replica raviolis and pretend lasagna to the menu with the book-mould and cutter. There are also moulds for make-believe macaroni and cheese and fun toppings.

Host a Play-Doh Pizza Party with your very own Play-Doh pizzeria. Make, shape and slice the wackiest pizza’s imaginable with a selection of fun tools and squishy Play-Doh compound. Use the roller to roll out some imaginary pizza dough in the pan, grate a pile of make-believe mozzarella and then add your favorite pretend toppings with the half-mould paddle. You can also use the grater to squeeze your own silly spaghetti dish. When you’re ready, slice your Play-Doh pizza, toss it in the box, and deliver to your friends.

Create the tastiest looking pretend lunches with the Play-Doh Lunchtime Creations Containing a variety of stamps, cutters, rollers and other tools and five different Play-Doh colours creating a feast of Play-Doh sandwiches, pizzas, cookies and other ‘treats’. Use the server and plates included to display your lunchtime masterpieces.

Creativity never looked so sweet with Play-Doh Kitchen Creations. It’s Play-Doh Cake Party time and you can now make the most imaginative pretend cakes to celebrate any occasion. Shape all kinds of cakes in the Play-Doh oven or with the decorative cutters provided. Use the decorating tool to top it all off with swirly make-believe frosting. There is even confetti compound to add sparkle to your creation. Display your Play-Doh cake work of art in the cake dome, or present them with the plates and utensils included in the set.

Enjoy a Play-Doh frosting frenzy with Play-Doh Frost ‘n Fun Cakes. Aspiring cake chefs can feel like pros with all the right tools. Create Play-Doh Bundt cakes and crazy cakes that look like teddy bears and stars with the three cake moulds included or build a crazy tiered cake with the three cake cutters and cake tier. Now for the best part – decorating. Cover the creations in fluffy Play-Doh frosting with the frosting tool, which comes with three tips for a variety of shapes. Top it all off with make-believe candies, silly fruits, and other fun toppings with the half-moulds.

Create tasty looking pretend Play-Doh treats with the Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Chocolate Pops. Simply place Play-Doh compound into one of the moulds included then pop it out and insert on one of the sticks provided.

The Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Colourful Cookie Creation set prepares you for the ultimate Play-Doh cookie bake off. With the cookie sheet and 4 cookie cutters, there are lots of ways to make pretend cookies in all kinds of shapes and sizes, including gingerbread men, wacky wafers, and even stacks of silly sandwich cookies. Add fun patterns  and decorations to the cookies with the unique textured rolling pin and frosting tool – prepare for kids to go a bit Play-Doh cookie crazy.

Serve up some Play-Doh Ice Cream Treats. Now there’s no need to choose between a dish or a cone, as this set has both. The easy-release scoop makes it super simple to grab some Play-Doh ‘ice cream’ out of the can. Press different Play-Doh colours through the grated handle on the scoop to cover the creations in make-believe sprinkles. The whipped cream tool can squeeze pretend whipped topping, and the stand can help keep the cone from toppling over. The creations will look cooler than ever, and the best part is that they won’t melt.

The Play-Doh Kitchen Creations range of playsets will be available from Toys R Us, ToyZone, Toy Kingdom, Hamleys and other major retailers. You can also shop online for Play-Doh Kitchen Creations products at Takealot.com.

La Roche-Posay skincare products

La Roche-Posay review by The Mommy CityIf you or your child has suffered with ezcema, or even dry skin, you will know the anguish of sleepless nights and itchy skin. Ethan battled, and after trying many different options, and taking a holistic approach to caring for his skin, his skin improved dramatically. It was through this process, that I also considered my own skin and identifying that I too suffered from occasional eczema flare-ups and dry skin. I also learnt that any changes in our routine or environment, can have a major affect on our sensitive skin.

After a trip to the Karoo, it took only one bath for Ethan’s skin to dry out and he woke to inflamed skin, mostly behind his knees. I had not considered that the water would be so hard, and the poor little guy did suffer until we got his skin under control again. A few weeks later, we moved house and again our skin reacted, as the water is harder than we have been used to. It got me thinking about our water quality due to shortages, and wondering if other families have noticed the difference to their skin?

When I was introduced to the La Roche-Posay range of skincare products, I specifically requested to try their Lipikar range. All the La Roche-Posay ranges are suitable for even the most sensitive skin. Their tagline is ‘A better life for sensitive skin’. However their Lipikar range is especially suited to very dry, irritated skin prone to itching. The whole family – babies, children and adults – can use the products which soothes skin immediately, and spaces out the flare-ups of severe dryness.

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Body Range

As part of your daily routine, cleanse the body with either the body wash or cleansing bar. The Lipikar Syndet AP+ anti-irritation cleansing body wash comes in a 200ml easy squeeze tube, or the cost saving 400ml pump dispenser with a RRSP of R270. If you prefer a cleansing bar, the Lipikar Surgras is for daily use on the face and/or body, with a RRSP of R110.

La Roche-Posay review by The Mommy City

La Roche-Posay Face

Products that I have been using on my face, include their foaming water cleanser and anti-marks cream. The Cleansing Micellar Foaming Water cleanses sensitive skin while respecting its physiological balance. With no soap, no colourants, no alcohol and no parabens, it’s ideal for my sensitive skin. The foam feels so soft against my skin, and a good price at RRSP R170. My skin has it’s imperfections which I have learnt to love, though I do want a more even skin tone. The Effaclar Duo+ is an anti-imperfections and anti-marks cream for the face. So far, I have noticed a reduction of blackheads around the nose and chin, and hope to see an improvement on general skin tone after longer use.

Latest toys and boardgames for the family

There are two things I am enjoying most this winter holiday. Sitting by the fireplace reading or playing a game, and the kids happily playing together (without me). Paige and Ethan are finally playing nicely together for up to an hour sometimes, without fighting (*gasp*). They are at such a nice age where they are the best of friends and come up with the most imaginative games. Their playroom has been upside down since the start of the holidays, and will probably remain that way until school term starts. If you are looking for new toys to keep your kids entertained for hours, here are some newly launched options for all ages.

Teletubbies plush toyTeletubbies (18+ months)

Teletubbies fans will be pleased to know that their favourite cute and cuddly characters Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po are now available for them to take home in a whole new plush range. Lallaby Laa-Laa is the perfect toy to gently sing your baby to sleep with classic lullabies such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  This super soft cuddly toy has a gentle light that shines when you press her tummy. You also have the option of choosing how long Laa-Laa gets to sing – either 5, 10 or 15 minutes. The Talking Plush toy is available in all four Teletubbies characters, Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po. When you gently press the plush toy’s tummy you can hear them talk and make sound effects.

The new range also introduces the Laughing Giggle Plush toy, which is available in Po and Laa-Laa characters. It is very soft to the touch.  When you tickle the toy, it laughs and giggles – the more you tickle them the more they giggle. Jumping Po is also part of the plush series, she jumps and bounces and really personifies happiness.

Glimmies

Glimmies (3+ years)

A first in the South African market, but with a growing fan base the world over, Glimmies are a super cute glow in the dark range of toys. Each star fairy (23 to collect) represents a forest animal and has its own distinct features and characteristics resembling each animal they have been sent to protect.

Some of the star fairies include the Fox Glimmies, Foxanne (purple) and Volpessa (forest green), these two are always lucky and can get themselves out of any tricky situation.  Doterella is also the leader of all the Glimmies owing to her ability to raise spirits when the other Glimmies’ are feeling low. Hazelyn (orange) and Almendra (pink), the squirrel Glimmies are adventurous, full of energy and are always looking for special treasures to hide in secret places. The Glimmies are guaranteed to be a popular choice for all young fairy fans aged 3 years and older.

Grossery Gang and TMNT

Grossery Gang (5+ years)

Welcome to Cheap Town, the ramshackled, former bustling town now occupied by the grubby Grossery Gang.  This gang of spoilt grocery goods have gone way past their use-by dates and have rankled their way to life on the dreadful shelves of the Yucky Mart to create their own kind of fun – the rotten variety. There are over 150 Grossery items to collect. The Mushy Slushie Machine Playset is a must-have for your child to show off his collection, while adding two more Grosseries to his assortment. Collect all the members of the Grossery Gang and your very own Yucky Mart will be open for business. What about the Grossery Gang Sticky Soda for a refreshingly revolting drink? What you’ll get in the pack is four of the grubby bunch with a surprise lurking in the mess.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (4+ years)

From their home in sewers of New York City, these four brothers battle petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated creatures, and alien invaders while attempting to remain hidden from society. TMNT has always been a popular boys brand for over three decades and are generational heroes.

Leonardo is the tactical, courageous leader of the Ninja Turtles and a devoted student of Ninjutsu. He usually wears a blue mask and wields two katanas. Michelangelo is the most comical of the brothers, wearing an orange mask and his choice of weapon is a pair of nunchucks. Donatello is the scientist, inventor, engineer and technological genius of the Ninja Turtles. He dons a purple mask and a bo-staff. Raphael is the bad boy of the Ninja Turtles, wearing a red mask and wielding a pair of sais. Splinter is the mutant rat sensei and adoptive father of the Ninja Turtles.
