Mel is the mom behind Melsbuzz, a range of unique baby products and accessories designed for everyday moms at affordable prices. Mel’s experience in design began after matriculating and choosing to study textile designing at the Cape Town College.
During her studies she started Melsbuzz with her mom selling hand painted and ceramic table settings at markets. In 2002 she travelled to the UK to further her career and ended up Au Pairing for 3 years, whilst fabric painting on the side. When she returned to SA, she carried on Au Pairing for various Cape Town families but still keeping busy with her fabric painting making hand painted sleeping bags to table clothes and nappy bags.
Whilst Au Pairing, she found that there were a number of useful products lacking in the baby industry. This is when she invented the waterproof sandpit cover after finding it a real pain to keep the lid on the clam and the sand clean and dry.
This was the start of the Melsbuzz baby range and the pit cover is now sold nationwide at all Baby City’s. She grew her business whilst still working full time, and over the years has expanded her range and now sells 14 products.
Her product range includes bandana bibs, blankets, boys boxers and dummy ribbons, and is constantly experimenting with fabric and new designs.
In 2008 Mel had a little boy named Zach and in 2013 her daughter, Pippa joined the family. Her children are the inspiration for many of her products and Zach was the first model for the bandana bibs. Her goal is to make products for everyday moms you cannot afford expensive brand name products.
She runs her business from her home and she says her house looks like a constant factory with products being cut and packaged every week. She employs 2 CMT’s (Cut, Make & Trim) that help sew and package.
Melsbuzz products are sold nationally at all Kids Emporiums and you can order online and keep up to date with the latest products through her Facebook page. You can read my review of the popular bib mat, pop on pop off clip, dummy ribbons and bandana bib here. Well done Mel for managing to juggle being a wife, mom, business owner and employer, whilst growing Melsbuzz to be a business that offers parents a wide range of unique baby products.
