I am very fortunate to know a super bunch of ladies and fellow #bwb bloggers, and every few weeks we get together to catch up in person. Our recent meet up was held at the swish 15 on Orange Hotel in Gardens with Executive Chef Sanel Esterhuyse and Pastry Chef Retha Thorpe as hosts of their macaron workshop. We were greeted with champagne, a selection of teas, coffees and juices, and canapés. The dedicated waiter kept the champagne flowing and with glasses in hand, we took to our ‘stations’ to begin the workshop. It felt like we were at a ‘Master Class’, watching the pros demonstrate the art of macaron making, then taking on the challenge of making our own.
The ingredients used to make these delectable treats are inexpensive and readily available, the techniques used to create them, however, are important to learn. The Chefs explained each step, the common mistakes made in their preparation, and how to properly pipe the mixtures. I need quite a lot more practice with the piping and a kitchen maid, as a proper blender is a must. With any baking, you should follow a recipe and properly measure out ingredients to avoid a flop, and we were given printouts of the recipes and some useful info to take home.
